A mature Ceanothus in full flower is an impressive sight, clothed in characteristic blue. These evergreen shrubs look particularly good grown or trained against a sunny, sheltered wall, but can also be used as border plants, informal hedges and ground cover.
A fast growing evergreen shrub up to 1.8m high and 1.2 m wide, with oval, glossy dark green leaves to 3cm long. Produces terminal and lateral panicles to 5cm long, of bright indigo-blue flowers in mid to late spring, also known as blue blossom or ‘Californian lilac’ is popular with pollinators.
Grow Ceanothus in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade, towards the front of a mixed border
