An upright, frost-tender, woody-based perennial to 90cm tall with small, aromatic, mid green leaves. Tubular, pink-purple flowers with darker calyces are borne in open racemes on dark stems over a long period- usually from early summer to late autumn.
Grow in humus-rich, well-drained soil in full sun or lightly dappled shade in a warm, sheltered position; protect from frosts by overwintering under glass or treat as an annual.

To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon they start to fade. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring. Protect from excessive cold and waterlogged soils.
