Fatsia japonica is a bold, evergreen shrub valued for its large, glossy, deeply lobed leaves that bring a tropical feel to the garden. Despite its exotic appearance, it is fully hardy in most parts of the UK, making it a reliable choice for year-round structure and interest.

Thriving in partial to full shade, Fatsia japonica is ideal for brightening darker areas such as woodland gardens, shaded borders, and north-facing walls. It prefers a sheltered position, protected from strong winds which can damage its broad leaves. Its architectural form makes it an excellent focal point or backdrop within mixed planting schemes.

Typically growing to around 2–3 metres in height and spread, it forms a bushy, upright habit over time. In autumn, mature plants produce clusters of small, creamy-white flowers followed by glossy black berries, adding seasonal interest and attracting wildlife.

Fatsia japonica is equally suited to growing in the ground or in large containers, particularly in courtyards or patios where its striking foliage can be appreciated up close. Its lush, tropical look pairs well with other shade-loving plants for a layered, textural effect.

Fatsia japonica is low-maintenance and easy to grow in the right conditions. Plant in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, and position in shade or partial shade for best results.

Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first year after planting and for container-grown specimens. Apply a mulch in spring to help retain moisture and improve soil quality.

Pruning is minimal—remove any damaged or yellowing leaves as needed, and lightly shape the plant in spring if required.

Although hardy, young plants may benefit from protection in particularly cold or exposed locations. Once established, Fatsia japonica is a resilient, long-lasting addition to the garden, providing structure and evergreen interest throughout the year.
